Lipstick Love

Hello Lovelies:

It’s time to clean up and prepare for an immense year.

Decluttering Has Commenced

I hate dry lips. Lip balm, gloss, and lipstick are usually never far away. So when I bought some new makeup and received some as Christmas gifts, I decided that going through my make-up should be part of my New Year’s decluttering.  I’ve got a lot going on this coming year, so getting things organized is priority number one.

Yesterday, I resolved that I would start with cleaning out the medicine cabinets and my lipstick collection because I kept finding tubes that were almost done. After my initial gathering, I had no less than seven sticks that were down to “just a little” left. I also had about five of those mini samples from Avon and Clinique that come with the bonus gifts. They were good colors too. I got to work, using old (but now sterilized) contact lense containers to store these chunks of creamy bouche goodness. I had started down the rabbit hole of lip coverage.

By the time I scooped out like colors, I had six of those little bad boys filled with mostly nude and red shades. I marveled at my tenacity to even scrape out two ultra thick lip color pencils (they are even too large for my biggest sharpener) and one gold gloss that was only partially used because the applicator didn’t even reach to half way down the bottom! By the time I was finished, I had wiped the little remaining bits on my lips. My pout looked amazing in multiple sparkling shades.

And I now had amazing little pots of color I could use and not waste. I hate wasting things. Note, I did not keep anything that looked or smelled like it was going bad.

I realized I needed to check my makeup bag, the medicine cabinet, a couple sink storage spots, my purse, and my special events makeup kit to see what I really had. The results were shocking. I have a problem. I am a lip coverage addict. I thought I was down to just a few colors. I assembled quite the stash from purple to bright pink to my favorite deep red from Clinique. Twenty-four lipsticks and gloss tubes (yes I know, crazy!), four liners, and five lip plumpers which I had totally forgotten about. Oh and two lip balms. I had everything from the cheap L.A. dollar store brand to Clinique, Avon to Kryolan and Ben Nye theatrical brands, Makeover Essentials to one fantastic Revlon nude shade that I picked up for under $2 at a Walgreens last year. And I got this Buxom gloss from my sister in law that’s so good it hadn’t left my purse since Christmas. I am clearly obsessed.

The rest of my make-up was far less challenging because two years ago, I realized I had WAY too much shadow. I only cleaned out a couple of brown shades that were stuck in the corners of containers that went to the recycling bin. But as I went along, I also found two scented bars of sculpting soap and other bs like that. I cut ‘em up and put them in my huge bath gel dispenser with another sample size bath lotion (along with what was previously in there, vanilla bath foam and xmas cinnamon—wait for it—from last year and I mean 2016). I’m gonna use that stuff, I swear, and I have been, just like I got through the too much eye shadow, one day at a time.

I found two unopened mascaras that I was looking for. And I sorted through make up brushes too.

I also found two tubes of body shimmer and one tube of glitter which belonged in the special kit. I confess that the body shimmer is the bomb. It’s some silvery stuff I bought from Avon, and it highlights like nothing else I’ve seen. I need a special event to just cover myself in it like a vampire from Twilight. And it’s not a bad thing. I do enough shoots and events to where this stuff will get used. Which brings me to…

The cellulite creams, body lotions, oils, etc. Yeah, that was part of two years ago “let’s pare this back a little”. I put a bunch of them in one big bottle with some self-tanning creams—and forgot about it. Even though the immense bottle is in the same caddy as my bath soap with a tub of lavender foot lotion that’s (I can’t believe this) TEN years old. I remember because that’s when I had I house and I’ve now been in my apartment ten years. Wow, that’s hard to admit. Ah well, yep, it’s so freaking cold and dry here right now, that yes, I using that stuff TODAY. Again none is going to waste and I’ll be soft as a baby’s bottom. The Mississippi is starting to really ice up as we hit day thirteen of below freezing temps. You can see the progression.

I did good today. I also took out five bags of recycling (don’t judge, I just haven’t had time since before Christmas when I threw my back out), I made a massive pot of bean mix for burritos, etc., banana oatmeal bread (my apt smelled heavenly), did one load of laundry, squeezed in a short workout, promoted some artwork online, starting planning for an upcoming shoot, and even sorted through a sandwich bag full of AA batteries. To explain, my portable CD player practically eats them. However, after they’re done in the player, they’re still good enough for the TV remote, mini flashlights, a couple of clocks, and a small portable fan in the bathroom.  And I still got to sleep in.

So next up is more laundry and cleaning up xmas over the next few days. After that, organizing craft/art supplies and moving some furniture. Like I said, I gotta have things in place to be able to work more efficiently because 2018 is my year. Get ready for some delightful things!

Happy New Year!

Hello Lovelies!

So first, like most of you, I’ve made one very simple New Years resolution:

Also, a little less social media, a lot more creativity, and a lot more exercise.

My little run to the ER with massive back spasms on xmas eve day was a brutal reminder that I need to stay healthy.

2017 was filled with highs and lows and the gaps between were massive; very little grey area.

On the bad side, my older sister passed away on Easter after a 30+ year battle with MS. The very next night I had to style a photo shoot. And just a week later I had a book signing and photo promo shoot (of me).Honest to God, I am so grateful to have been surrounded by friends and family.

I also had to put Bobalou down. I still miss him, but realize a pet isn’t a good thing for me to have right now.

My sis in law lost her mother only a couple months after her father was seriously ill in the hospital. I also had to break off a couple of professional relationships that weren’t fruitful and actually downright scary.

The highs were well, amazing. I put out four books:

1) A Book of Sleepy Dogs

2) A Long Reign (my first amazon bestseller)

3) Illustrated-Cecilia’s Tale (A Children’s Book I illustrated for my editor, Debbie Manber Kupfer!)

4) The First Ten Bites (a compilation of my vamp series)

5) I started a book on NaNoWriMo!

6) and ended the year with a short story submission. Literally on NYE!!

I curated a Steampunk art show and the first Broken Hearts Ball and Fashion Show-at 1900 Park, and shows at The Heavy Anchor.

I had two shows at the Dog Museum and donated my annual piece to Stray Rescue’s annual Urban Wanderers art show.

Big River Steampunk Festival was incredible. And managing the Masquerade Fashion Show was amazing:

The year ended with the Lafayette Square House Tour. It was inspiring!

New Years came in with a cold blast. I relaxed at home with movies, cookies, treats, wine, writing, and pancakes!!

And it was so cold that ice was on the Mississippi on New Years Day:

Thank you for letting me share another trip around the sun with you all.

Of course with end of the year, all holiday items in my shop are already marked at 50% until 12/15/18. http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheHauteHen

2018 is going to be magical. So many plans are already in the works.

Peace to you and yours, and as always, thank you for reading!

On Death and Creation

Dear Readers:
Last week I was overwhelmed. I still am a bit. Preparing for a major con is really having a whole other job. The kinda job you need to do full time. More than once, I had to just have the ugly cry and get it out.

The older I get, the more I realize I don’t have time for petty drama, or doing or having things that don’t bring me joy. And then again, sometimes you don’t get to choose to make those changes.

On Easter, my older sister passed away after an almost thirty year battle with Multiple Sclerosis, the same disease that killed my mother twelve years ago this fall.

Since last autumn, my sister had steadily declined with seizures that eroded her bodily functions. MS and multiple addictions had taken their toll. She was in hospice care for roughly six to nine months with all of the drama of dealing with finding her better care, treatment, and what ever it took to make her more comfortable. Much of the more peaceful rest came as a result of my younger brother’s compassion and previous medical experience.

She had manic episodes that were so jarring, I had to bite my lip from crying. Often, I couldn’t stop. We took turns feeding her. There were days she was definitely winning battles, but overall, we knew she was losing the war.

During this time, I visited when I could, in between shows, the holidays, and a business trip to New Orleans. Every visit, I lost a little more of her, like tearing off a band aid hair by hair, ever so painfully slow.

On the good side, my family rallied together for support. I am blessed to have so many siblings. I have no idea how only children can handle this kind of tragedy.

On my sister’s 50th birthday, she’d been almost too heavy for her mobility scooter. By Easter last year, I had to bring her new clothes as she was on a diet.

That day was golden for me. She was completely lucid. We talked about our life as kids. We didn’t always have the best relationship; sister sibling rivalry can be brutal. But I’d forgiven her long ago. She talked about getting well enough to leave assisted living, get a job, and to have more time with her daughter.

So it was ironic when, about a week before this Easter, she started to truly slip away. She stopped eating and talking. Within a couple days, we knew she was dying, it was just a matter of when. She had wasted away, but her skin was oddly soft and radiant. Her fingers had curled tightly around her sheets. We placed a rosary in her grip. One of her care nurses said she had the strongest heart despite all her other organs shutting down. The longest they’d ever seen someone last on just oxygen was eleven days. My sister made it past much of eight.

On Easter, the majority of my family skipped dinner and went to hospice. Over a period of seven hours, I watched her skin pale, the light in her eyes go, while I and my family reminisced and grieved. At 10:30pm, she finally let go.

We had the luxury of time for memorial as we choose cremation, but for two weeks, I was a zombie. I had a book signing and two photo shoots scheduled, one the Monday night after Easter. How I churned out some incredible work during this time is beyond me. Maybe because I let myself have my pain and not give a rats ass what anyone else thought.

From the photoshoot I styled/designed the day after she passed:

The above shoot, a few days after my sister’s death, right after a book signing. Photo credit Lori Peterson.

And including this portrait I drew (shown from start to finish) of my sister for her memorial:

Spring and early summer were filled with the usual ups and downs of the art business, including a stalker that made me more inclined to credit, copyright, and trademark my work. I finished “A Long Reign” in three weeks for the Amazon UK Storytellers Competition. But I didn’t do well at the usual Lafayette Square House Tour.

My bunny Bobalou had been increasingly tired. Always incredibly sweet, but he’d been taking long naps with hilarious periods of dreaming. The night before he passed, I’d stopped at the pet store and decided to get him the “good stuff” as intuition told me I didn’t have much time with him left. He demolished it and almost fell asleep with his head on the dish.

Like most elderly house rabbits, he succumbed to pneumonia. Within moments of a wheezing fit, I had an appointment at the emergency pet clinic. Within the hour, with complete agreement from the vet, Bobalou was led gently over the Rainbow Bridge.

I had him for 10 of his 12 remarkably healthy years. However, with so much change coming, including more travel, I’ve opted to not get a new pet for now and his things will help homeless bunnies at the Missouri House Rabbit Society.

The end of July was just a shit show. A friend’s marriage is in trouble. Another friend was raped by someone she knew. I got dumped after a short summer romance, and the day after that, my car broke down. And it was freakishly hot for a few days. But I survived, lol.

Summer is almost over. Today as I hit crunch time for Big River, I’ve come to roof for a break, to reflect, and have on last cry. It’s amazingly nice weather for late August.

What I’ve learned from being an artist is that I never want to stop feeling. You often hear that some artists turn out their best work when high or drunk. I try not to judge those that imbibe, each to their own, but I don’t. Those chemical filters turn off my senses. I can’t create what I don’t feel. And after what’s happened this year, I really have the feels.

In my works, especially the novels, I don’t take death or treatment of characters lightly.  “A Long Reign” is brutal. More so than “Strax and the Widow” and “Revenge and Machinery”. Almost on par with “the Vampire’s Little Black Book Series”, if not even more jarring. I don’t add sex or violence for shock value. Controversial things happen because just like life, things happen. And most times, they happen for a reason, though we may never know exactly why. I can deal with that as long I learn from experience. This year, I’ve learned a lot, and learned to let go.

I said it to a friend today, you can’t move forward until you leave something behind. Forward I go with the fullest of hearts.

So now, back into the intense throes of prep for Big River Steampunk Festival-details on the event in my links below.
