Eye on the Sky Part 2

Hello Lovelies!

As promised, here’s part two of Eye of the Sky! Please read to the end for a special FREE preview!!!!

In the upcoming “Lafayette to London”, the third part of the Society Trilogy, the famous Cyclone of May 27, 1896 makes an appearance and fictional life of my main character, Kate Church. I drew from my personal experience with tornadic storms and actual history and research of the event.

This was a massive storm that left over 255 dead and thousands injured. The path of destruction covered most of the St. Louis area from the southwest edge of the city all the way across the Mississippi River into East St. Louis.

So the FREEBIE? this part of Lafayette to London will be FREE as a digital short on May 27th on Amazon/Kindle. So fire up your ereaders to pick up a preview of this great book!

Relics and Treasures or I Cried as Notre Dame Burned

Hello Lovelies!

This blog is not what I had planned on writing. It’s in the very early hour of April 16 and I’ve finished an odd/sad day of promoting, cleaning, wrapping up taxes, updating my computer, watching a couple of awesome drama filled shows (they always make me laugh and cry) and helping a carpenter get shutters on the lovely Campbell House, a place I’m delighted to call home, despite the fact I knocked my head on the cellar door amongst other terrible things today.

I’ve written about the House a few times before: a piece for Steampunk Journal, and last week, a blog about storm spotting. The Campbell House is a rare jewel, rehabbed after surviving over 160 years while a developing St. Louis encroached all around it.

Unfortunately, in the last few weeks, other wonderful historical buildings/monuments have not fared so well.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library and Museum, an iconic building in St. Louis, which housed an immense collection of media history, suffered a four alarm blaze. Over 30 emergency vehicles managed to spare the building from a total loss, and saved much of collections inside. Picture: St. Louis Post Dispatch

And just a couple nights ago, a freak windstorm ripped part of the newly refurbished roof of a historic church, built in 1834, the Old Cathedral, which resides under the Gateway Arch. Photos: Roche Madden Fox2/AP

So when I’d began to fix lunch early this afternoon and hoped to relax while watching the Talk, CBS News broke in. Like most people, I could not believe my eyes. Notre Dame, one of the most famous structures in the world and the very heart of Paris was on fire.

Like so many other tragedies, 9/11, the Shuttle disasters, even the Titanic (which ironically sank on same day, on April 15, 1912), it’s almost unfathomable.

Notre Dame (and Paris) has been on my bucket list to visit for a long time. To see the steeple collapse amidst a tantrum of flames made me cry instantly.

For those that love art, history, architecture, or culture, the images of Notre Dame fully aflame was terrifying. The billows of thick black smoke poured from the majestic Cathedral that was over 800 years old. As most of the interior framework was made of wood, and under going a major renovation, the fire moved quickly and caused the roof to fall in as well.

There is something about our preservation of these marvels of architecture that makes me swoon. The stenciled or painted ceilings inside, gothic columns, sculptures of gargoyles and saints, and exquisite colorful stained glass seem to be small miracles.

Just as I was finishing up other works tonight, I did hear the good news that most of relics and art was spared and that billionaires are stepping forward to rebuild it. I hope the grande Dame of Paris will rise from the ashes.

Playing Catch Up and a Trailer Shoot

Hello Lovelies!

I can not believe it’s mid-April! February and March flew by. April is doing the same so far.

I’ve moved, changed jobs, landed a public art project, and got nominated for best author in an “A List” competition.

After an incredible writing binge, for a couple contests, in late fall until mid winter, the sprint of change began. A lot of projects got pushed to the wayside.

I am pleased to announce that although some of my promised projects will be delayed, they are still coming.

I finally finished the book trailer for the short story, The Kicho, which I managed to squeeze in a shoot on a rare decent early January day.

I met up with the fabulous Stefanie Zhong at one of the local parks that had preserved several historic buildings.

Stephanie was a pro, playing two different characters, handling two costume changes, and several scenes in just over an hour. Here’s a few stills:

The finale product is here on my YouTube channel, enjoy!:

Eye on the Sky Part 1

Hello Lovelies!

I am a weather nerd. I love to read on rainy days where the smell of the drops is intoxicating. Sunrises and sunsets (even more so) make me giddy. Hamster sized snowflakes put me in a tizzy, but I’d rather not drive on ice.

Not all of this is born by a love of cloud formations and the like. I have a healthy respect for Mother Nature especially after a hellish hailstorm/tornado around the time I was four years old.

My very pregnant mom was in a PTA meeting in the new gym of my primary school. I was too young for school, so I was in the nearby cafeteria with the babysitters. These two parts of the buildings were attached by a hallway made entirely of windows.

You can guess what happened next. I remember that the cafeteria got very very dark as a spring storm arrived. Suddenly the babysitters were screaming for everyone to get under the tables. I remember a loud noise and a lot of crashing as most of the windows in that walkway (except two made of plexiglass) had blown in. And just as quickly as it had come, it was gone.

I was screaming like a banshee. The hallway was covered in glass shards and huge hailstones, but that wasn’t going to keep me from my mom as I attempted to break free of one of the caregivers.

One of the other PTA moms braved the sea of destruction and carried me to my poor frazzled mom.

The evidence of that storm was around for a long time. A lot of our neighbors had to get new roofs. Our shingles were shot. Our domed bbq grill was pitted with pock marks from the hail. The exhaust chimney was pelted.

I remember massive Midwest storms after that. Sleeping in the hallway outside my parents bedroom (or almost under their bed) because I was terrified. And later, when I was older, letting my younger sister hog my bed because she was frightened.

Humid St. Louis, on the edge of tornado alley, is a hotbed for violent thunderstorms and the occasional tornado. Fearing possible terrible damage to our house, my dad eventually had two massive cottonwood trees cut down from our back yard.

As I got older, with some encouragement from my older brother, I would watch storms move in. Hurricanes, earthquakes, astronomy, sun flares, and an amazing eight grade science teacher, Mrs. Dougherty, almost led me to the path of being a meteorologist. But I was a creative kid, and the arts were calling.

I eventually became a weather spotter. I like my “weather porn” and occasionally watch reruns of Storm Chasers. I have two weather apps on my phone. I follow Reed Timmer and Jim Cantore on social media. I was stunned by the Joplin tornado and one twister that did a direct hit on Lambert St. Louis International Airport. I’ve spent hours at my windows and finally got one good “money shot”, a major bolt of lightning just skirting past the Gateway Arch:

So a few nights ago, after a humid day and thunderstorm watches popped, I headed out to do my first spotting outside of the Campbell House Museum. A freakishly beautiful sunset and brilliant cloud formations made stunning photos. The lightning colors were amazing:

Real Purple Rain eh? Enjoy my spotter footage in the next one. I’ll feature more about my fascination with storms in Part 2 of this blog in a few weeks with a very, very special preview of “Lafayette to London”, the third book of the First Society Series!

I’m having a banner day. Today I sold a bunch of costumes/pieces at Avalon Exchange on the Loop, but found these gems:

So tomorrow, I’ll post about my freakish love of the weather, but here’s a sample of what you’ll see, and yes that is purple lightning:

Building Character

Hello Lovelies!

I am a character. Parts of me are in my characters. Parts of other people make their way into my works.

I’ve written about character development before, so forgive me if some of this is a rehash. Where do some of the traits of my heroes and villains come from? Could or should a main character act or do something out of the ordinary? Should certain characters mix?

For me, the answers are simple. It’s authenticity. If I can be brave enough to bring my feelings and experiences to the table, then yes, I can write it and put my belief behind my pieces.

A few examples. Kate Church is my first main character in my steampunk society series. She goes through hell and back, several times, to the point of developing some serious mental issues (which “hint” is a little spoiler for the upcoming “Lafayette to London”).

When we first meet Kate, she’s trying to survive in a Western town that saw it’s best days long ago. She’s kind but spirited and draws from faith, past experiences, and a little luck to pull her through some precarious events. Kate has the ability “to turn it on”, that gusto that athletes and musicians have at the starting line or at curtain time. And after the show? They can shut it off, unwind, go home. Sometimes there’s a performance afterglow, but still the gift of chill.

I got in an interesting discussion about this on/off talent with a friend. They didn’t believe someone could just “turn it on”. I reminded them that first responders do it every day (as again do musicians and athletes). Is every rescue, reaction, or performance perfect? No. Can people get always through it without issues? Probably not, BUT maybe they don’t let it show. Will they suffer consequences of burying feeling? Probably and I adjust my characters accordingly.

Kate does some things that may seem “out of character”. But I hope that readers will keep pushing forward to find out the “why”. I like my characters to unwind like an old spool of ribbon, not always straight, sometimes loopy, but always the expected width and length.

Will, my vampire, has been through every emotion. After over 600 years on the planet, he’s done or seen pretty much everything. Each “new” experience reminds him of previous lives.

My favorite (and seemingly everyone else’s) Vampire’s Little Black Book series stories is “Mabel”. There’s a lot of her in me, and every other sweet older woman that’s missed the boat in some respects in life. Mabel is not your typical beauty. She’s been denied love, family, and the better things in life. Yet, Will finds the naïveté of her heart irresistible. I know why Mabel is a favorite. Mabel is every woman. Mabel is imperfect. And I think most of the readers can relate to Mabel’s character traits: shyness, loneliness, and kindness.

My villains run the gamut from truly evil (Drasco in “Strax and the Widow”) to people that suddenly find themselves on the wrong side (Brother Evan in “The Kicho”). Drasco is filthy, rude, and angers his superiors by killing too much. In contrast, Brother Evan bumbles the handling of a targeted female agent by falling in love and impregnating her.

I’ve hired models/actors to portray some of my characters in photos and book trailers, which makes my work even more interesting to see their take on my characters. And after seeing some of the photos, more traits come to the surface. Even a short shoot I did of Steampunked Marie Antoinette gave me insight to an upcoming character in “Lafayette to London” and inspiration a whole different genre as well:

The list of characters grows. I hope you enjoy the upcoming pieces.

The Start of Something Big

Hello Lovelies!

I am an author, a writer, a storyteller, in many forms. I remember be able to draw before I could talk. I’ve always had an endless and wild imagination. I was a creative and gifted child. I wouldn’t realize just how much so, until many, many years later when I finally learned to not be so hard on myself and to follow my dreams.

There’s been bumps, anxiety, hiccups, and many missteps along the way. But my mom used to say “everything is going to be OK”. And it is. After struggles, heartbreak, and some really poor choices, I learned a lot.

I culled a lot from mistakes. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and makes great writing content. I learned that it’s not bad to ask for help. And in return to share knowledge with those that need it.

I also had to learn to remain positive. To choose to remember the good things and to take time to celebrate those occasions. Shout it from the rooftops.

A good artist friend of mine and I have the same affirmation. We’ve worked on a lot of shows and events together. We’ve talked about self promotion. And then later executed our ad plans for events. I always said “no one is going to do it for you”, especially without pay. There is no shame in championing your work, especially when it is your passion and you’ve worked your ass off.

It’s this wisdom that’s lead me here, to the start of something big. If you’ve been a reader of my blog since July 2012 (or anytime thereafter), first, many thanks, and secondly, I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey. I’ve posted and written about characters that have been dancing around in my head since around 2007.

Shortly after that time, the Great Recession exploded and my current creative cycle started. This Phoenix managed to rise from the ashes and started focusing on Steampunk as a whole art form while continuing to do dog art.

One of my earliest pics from that time, photo by John Moore:

This winter, I finally caught back up to writing and churned out some short stories, novellas, and competed in two contests. I didn’t win, but at the very least I placed and also received my my first score for screenwriting. I made a job change and made a move to new digs. I can barely believe this all happened in the space of a few weeks. And karma caught up to some people who, well, brought it upon themselves. Goodbye drama, hello serenity. I let karma take out the trash.

I am filled with plenty of stories to tell. The future is so bright, I gotta wear shades, to quote a quirky old tune. New dreams are born.

One of which, is to be on St. Louis Magazine’s A List. I’m a native St. Louisian. Many of my books take place here. The city I love is not perfect, but there is such a rich and rare history here that sometimes slips into my pieces.

If you’d like to help me get on the A List, I’d really appreciate your votes! If you comment in the discussion or on any of my posts in the Facebook event page, you’re eligible to win a basket full of my books and some steampunk swag goodies!
