Works in Progress

Dear Readers and Friends:

Creativity is on fire right now.

First some good news, I am featured on the Over 30 Cosplay page on Facebook today. Please take a gander here:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Over-30-Cosplay/1411617909131524

Also, as promised in my last blog: Today is the first in a series of “works in progress” or in other words, pieces I’ve tried to finish or new ones I’m working on for my steam show this summer.

First up, a look at a pile of pieces in line for work:

Next up, I’ve just reclaimed a water damaged piece and framed it.

“Radishes” will be going in the Etsy store soon.

Next, “Heart in Hand” an old embossing I’ve been meaning to frame. I created the embossing and used hand made paper.  I really like this piece in that it reminds me of old fashioned letters, when Victorian writing was truly an art. I mounted it in a frame but it can be easily removed should someone want to take the card and put down their sweet thoughts on elegant script.

It too will go in the Etsy store with this Butterfly Shadow Box I finally finished today. First, I had to reconstruct a real butterfly I’d found in my parking garage (I’m assuming it died in the heat somehow; it was a pretty hot day).

I then added at to a shabby chic college of press type, dyed paper, an illustration and cloth flower.

Then into a shadow box it went. Another piece for the Etsy store.

I’ll have more works in progress including many more steampunk items popping. Watch this space for some awesome things! Listed below are some updates and as always, thank you for reading!

Strax and the Widow Is Released! The Lady Has Arrived at Her Destination.

When I opened my email this morning, I was greeted with the notification that my Steampunk Western, “Strax and the Widow“, was published. It’s an ebook on amazon/kindle that’s been a labor of love, two years in the making, over twenty hours of editing, and it survived a major computer crash. I am tired, elated and relieved, all at once. I hope you enjoy the story of Kate Church. I have been chomping at the bit to release her on the world. Today is a “soft” release with some promotion. I’ll have a “solid” release with contests, etc. and hopefully hard copies of the book soon. Updates will be here, my social media links below, and on my Facebook  pro page, The Countess Official Fanpage of Victoria L. Szulc (link here): https://www.facebook.com/MySteampunkProject

If you’d like to purchase Strax and the Widow here is the amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Strax-Widow-Society-Trilogy-Book-ebook/dp/B00NSENACA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411413477&sr=8-1&keywords=Strax+and+the+Widow

I would also like to share that my Etsy store blew past the 3,000 views mark last week, much to my delight. I have a pre-Halloween and holiday sale and am adding many more items to shop, some as low as $5! My Etsy link is here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheHauteHen

And WILL RETURNS! Volume 9, “Svetlana Red” of The Vampire’s Little Black Book Series is soon to arrive, followed by v.10 “The Vamp Hit List”. I hope to have the whole series in a collection, “The First Ten Bites” available by Christmas/the holidays.

Thank you for your support. And as always, thank you for reading,

Victoria

Getting Wiggy With It and Changes

I have eight wigs, none of which of are real human hair. Now that I’m working for a costume/Halloween store full time, I have access to even more strands of colorful delight.

Last month I decided I was done with the rat race, the nine to five.  I quit a new day job I’d only had for six weeks. Although the pay was good and it was in my field,  some things I was promised at the onset didn’t evolve. I had just been through seven years of that madness in my previous employment. I’d decided I wasn’t going to go through another seven years of not being happy and broken promises.  So I quit and went full time to a fun job that will also allow me to write and create more. I was ready to make a leap of faith, ready to change.

It’s put another delay in finishing “Strax and the Widow”, but I am much happier and less stressed.

I find inspiration everywhere in the shop, in all the fun costumes and accessories.  I love the endless styles of wigs.  They too help me to change. I’m happy to share a bit of the selection here. Enjoy, I’ll keep you posted on the nifty things coming soon. And note I have reduced prices for a pre-Halloween sale in my Etsy store, so please take a gander.

Happy Birthday to mysteampunkproject.wordpress.com

It’s been two years ago this month that I started this blog. I can’t believe that much time has passed already. My adventure into steampunk as an art form has been creative, stimulating, educational, fun, but most of all, satisfying. If you want to read any of my blogs, there all here. But if you only have time for one, let it be this because there is such a spectacular array of neat things here.

I’ve welcomed you into this process and I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride so far. I’ve had my share of ups and downs, creative explosions and delays. Personal and professional challenges have arisen, sometimes seemingly out of nowhere. If you’re new to blog, please take a gander at my previous entries. It was one year ago this week that I had a major surgery that truly changed my life.  I am grateful to be alive. And yep, I blogged about it (see How to Turn a Herniated Umbilical into Vampire Material).

I’m keeping this entry short. I’m going to share a few of my favorite pics and give an update on Strax and the Widow. Strax will be digitally published next month. I’ve jumped some incredible hurdles to finally get it into print. But I don’t regret a single minute of the work. It has been pure pleasure. Thank you to my beta readers, editor and designer. I can not wait to unleash Kate Church on the world. Please watch my social media links below for a definite release date and enjoy some of my most popular works.

As I selected the pics below, I realize how far I’ve come as a maker, creator and chameleon. I did all the make up, modelling and costuming for the pics below unless credited otherwise. Enjoy! And thank you for reading.

Let Them Eat Cake, From St. Louis, Pt.1

During this adventure into Steampunk as an art form, I’ve been lucky enough to use it as a theme for some interesting public art projects. Last year I did the “Clockwork Cat” for The Harry and Hanley Project. A couple years ago, I did a steampunk corset and hat coupling for Soulard Art Market’s “Fashion Art” show. I featured both works in previous blogs.

Late last year, I was selected to participate in the stl250.org “Cakeway to the West”. My hometown, St. Louis, MO, the city I love, is celebrating its 250th birthday this year. stl250 is the community group promoting different events surrounding the city’s anniversary. “Cakeway to the West” is the visual component of this project. 250 fiberglass cakes were supplied to artists for “decorating”. Artists provided a theme and worked with the Regional Arts Commission and the Contemporary Art Museum on execution and placement in the St. Louis region.

My love for the machinery aspect of steampunk led me to choose Charles Lindbergh’s flight over the Atlantic in “The Spirit of St. Louis” which also became the name of my cake. Not only is the wonderful airplane featured on the cake, but a portrait of Lindberg and two airlines which started in Missouri, Ozark and TWA, are featured as well.

The top of the cake is painted with a faux propeller. Painted clouds form the icing. An oversized pair of goggles rests on the backside, while a flight scarf is draped around the two layers of the cake. I used one of my favorite mediums, soft acrylics and medium gloss sealant, to complete “The Spirit of St. Louis”.

I hope you enjoy some of the “in process” photos. My cake was placed at Creve Coeur Lake in St. Louis County. I can’t tell you exactly where, as stl250.org is doing a bit of a scavenger hunt. So please. feel free to look at the stl250.org website to see the Cake Leaderboard and join in the hunt. And just like the “Clockwork Cat”, I’ll have a steam inspired photo shoot as soon as we have some better weather.

Please note: I had difficulties with my hautehen.com website in January and February. It is under reconstruction with a new host and I’ll let you know as soon as it’s back up. I’ll also have the new parts of the Mardi Gras mask series in the next couple blogs.

Thank you for reading and your support,

-Victoria
