#Social Media Day 2018

Hello Lovelies:

Today is National Social Media Day. Ironically, I haven’t posted a whole lot today. After months of back to back events, I’m kinda tired.

I did more old school promo and artwork than social media. I started the day with four hours of research at the insanely gorgeous Central Library:

After a brief lunch break, I dropped off some amazing artwork that a generous couple bought at Stray Rescue’s annual art benefit, Urban Wanderers. I headed to a couple of craft stores for supplies for an onslaught of art creation. I wrapped up the day out with a trip to a lovely waffle and ice cream shop, Boardwalk Waffles and Ice Cream, to scope out the space where I’ll hang art for Let Them Eat Art! in a few weeks.

It wasn’t until I got home that I checked social media to see what everyone else was doing. And before I stayed on too long, I shut off my phone, and watched a nice romantic movie instead, “Miss Austin Regrets”.

I’ve been on this kick for a while. In the last couple weeks, I’ve been watching movies with the “good feels” bent, like “Somewhere in Time” (more on that in another blog). Maybe all the sniping all social media has put me in a funk?

Ah social media, the double edged sword. The place where you can share everything, wonder if anyone cares/don’t cares, share your work or event because posting is free, but not posting can cost you your sanity as you are now completely addicted to a world that doesn’t exist.

Like most people, I definitely have the love/hate relationship going with social media. On the pro side, I’ve connected with old friends and family, I can advertise my work, all my artwork and writing, for FREE. And I can see who’s liked/shared those posts. Gone are the days from sending off a portfolio or slides to a gallery. Gone are the days of hoping someone, anyone please, will publish your photos, your novel.

But then again, the cons. Haters, trolls, hackers, and bullies. The long winded political rants. Rudeness, lack of any sort of decorum. Pop up ads. Apps that run your battery down to almost nothing. And now that your work is out there? People are stealing it, making money off of it. How do you prosecute someone on the other side of the planet? And the modern day version of the chain letter, those “share this and be lucky”. Yep, lucky enough to spread some well planted virus or worm onto all of your friends list. Oh and finally, social media platforms finally confessed to selling your private info. I’m hardly shocked.

But despite all this, I’ll use it. I’ve just backed off a bit this year. I still need to promote, but time to create art is taking the forefront right now.

And when pieces are done, I’ll be happy to share them with you. But I’d love for you to come out and see some of it in person.

As always, thank you for reading,

Victoria
